Client/ location: Rentokil Initial UK
Task: To install a new bird point system to window ledges across 7 floors via Rope Access methods. Total area covered, 1400m.
Issues: Our client was supporting a large construction company who were developing the university's campus. Feral pigeons were present on the premisses and actively roosting on window ledges. Pigeon fouling was progressively building up and affecting the construction area and its work force. Fouling can create a potential slip hazard, and poses health risks, as contains bacteria and insects which are harmful to humans. Those associated insects could also spread into the internal areas of the building.
The cost of scaffolding the elevation was deemed exorbitant, and would also impact on the nature of the works below.
Solution: Steel Peaks provided a team of 3 IRATA qualified technicians to carry out the installation.
The team mobilised over a period of weekends as requested by both the client, and main contractor, so as not to impede with simultaneous projects. Dead weight trolleys were used as anchors, to allow the technicians to safety access the highlighted elevation, and complete the works.
All operations were carried out with a site specific rescue plan tailored to the task, and following site rules and procedures.
Steel Peaks Ltd holds combined liability insurance for high-level cleaning operations.
