The Challenge
Our client required the preparation and application of a bespoke coating system to the exoskeleton of the Leicester Tigers Trade View stands. The structure had previously been exposed to weathering and required a full surface preparation to ensure the coating system would adhere correctly and provide long-term protection.
Due to the height and complex geometry of the exoskeleton, conventional scaffolding was impractical and would have caused significant disruption to the surrounding area. A safe, efficient access solution was therefore essential.
Our Solution
Steel Peaks provided a team of IRATA-qualified rope access technicians, working alongside MEWP access where practical, to carry out the full surface preparation and application of the client-specific coating system. This project demonstrates our expertise in delivering specialist protective coating applications for large-scale sports infrastructure where precision, durability, and minimal disruption are critical requirements.
Following comprehensive surface condition assessment, the team prepared the exoskeleton by removing corrosion, contaminants, and any loose material to ensure a clean and sound surface. This thorough preparation phase is essential for coating system performance - even the highest quality coatings will fail prematurely if applied to inadequately prepared surfaces.
The bespoke coating system was then applied meticulously to all required areas, meeting the client's exact specification for durability and appearance. Multiple coats were applied with appropriate curing times between applications, ensuring optimal film build and long-term protective performance.
All works were delivered under a site-specific rescue plan and following strict health and safety procedures. The project was completed efficiently, with minimal disruption to the surrounding area, leaving the exoskeleton fully protected and restored to a high-quality finish.
Project Outcome
- Complete surface preparation removing corrosion and contaminants
- Bespoke coating system applied to exact client specification
- Long-term protection against weathering and environmental exposure
- High-quality finish enhancing stadium appearance
- Hybrid access approach optimising efficiency and safety
- Minimal disruption to stadium operations and surrounding area
- Comprehensive coverage across complex geometric structure
Protective Coating Systems for Stadium Infrastructure
Sports venue structures face constant exposure to weather, UV radiation, and environmental pollutants, making protective coating systems essential for long-term durability and appearance retention. Steel exoskeletons, in particular, require specialised coating systems that provide corrosion protection, weather resistance, and aesthetic longevity.
As an experienced rope access contractor specialising in stadium maintenance, Steel Peaks understands the specific performance requirements for sports venue coatings. Our technicians are trained in advanced coating application techniques, surface preparation standards (including ISO 8501 specifications), and the proper handling of specialist coating systems that demand precise environmental conditions and application procedures.
Coating Application Methodology
Professional coating application follows a systematic process to ensure optimal performance and durability:
- Surface Assessment: Evaluation of existing coating condition and substrate integrity
- Preparation Specification: Determination of appropriate preparation standards (e.g., Sa 2½ blast cleaning equivalent)
- Corrosion Removal: Mechanical removal of rust, corrosion products, and failing coatings
- Contamination Cleaning: Removal of oils, salts, and other contaminants affecting adhesion
- Surface Profile Creation: Achievement of appropriate surface profile for coating system
- Environmental Control: Monitoring of temperature, humidity, and dew point during application
- Primer Application: First coat application providing corrosion protection and adhesion base
- Intermediate/Finish Coats: Subsequent coats building film thickness and providing final appearance
- Quality Control: Film thickness measurement, holiday detection, and appearance inspection
Why Bespoke Coating Systems?
Standard off-the-shelf coating products may not provide adequate performance for demanding applications like stadium infrastructure. Bespoke coating systems are formulated specifically for the substrate type, environmental exposure conditions, required durability, and aesthetic requirements of the project.
The Leicester Tigers exoskeleton coating system was specified to provide:
- High-performance corrosion protection for structural steel
- UV stability maintaining colour and gloss retention
- Weather resistance to UK climate conditions
- Long maintenance intervals reducing lifecycle costs
- Specific aesthetic finish matching stadium branding
